Every conversation has a flow to it, and this flow isn’t always building. Similar to many other parts of life, it tends to cycle between the very interesting and occasionally the dreadfully boring. What’s interesting about this idea is how it changes with who you’re talking to. I believe that the only constant here is the cyclical nature. The frequency of the cycle, the amplitude of the cycle, and the absolute magnitude of each extreme can vary widely from person to person. I suspect that the best conversations are one with a high absolute magnitude, low amplitude, and very slow frequency–so that the quality of conversation is high all of the time, the highs aren’t too different from the lows, and when you hit a high, you stay there or close to it for a good while.
